Amorim favourite opens scoringNot many would have selected Uruguayan destroyer Manuel Ugarte as United's opening goalscorer of the game, but that's exactly what happened. The former star was on hand to finish off a brilliant team move that saw Alejandro Garnacho produce an excellent piece of skill from Fernandes' pass.
Ugarte had timed his run perfectly and struck clinically to score his second goal of the campaign. While it was a crucial strike, it would have satisfied Amorim even more given how crucial Ugarte was under him at Sporting Lisbon.
His all-round performance was also among the best he has produced since arriving at Old Trafford. Ugarte certainly he looks like one of those who could stay following a summer rebuild.
Who was your man-of-the-match between Man United and Lyon?
Onana stands up to be countedOne man who was under huge pressure coming into the game was goalkeeper The Cameroonian needed a big performance after a series of high-profile errors saw him
He was restored to the starting line-up at Old Trafford on Thursday and produced a brilliant stop to deny Rayan Cherki after an eye-catching run from the Frenchman. He also provided a strong save to frustrate Corentin Tolisso in the second period.
The goalkeeper was also very happy to give some grief to Lyon fans following United's goals. While there will still be questions over Onana, a few more decisive stops will go a long way to convincing supporters he has a future at the club.
Dalot gets another European strikePortuguese defender Diogo Dalot has put together an intriguing statistic this term. He has three goals to his name, all three of them coming in action.
And his latest goal was arguably the most important of the lot. He latched onto an excellent pass from , shrugged off Tagliafico and powered an effort home.
There were some brief questions that he had committed a foul on his way to scoring, but neither the referee nor VAR were interested as Dalot and his teammates celebrated a crucial goal.
Just as it looked as thought all was going the hosts' way, Lyon then roared back into the game with a dramatic comeback. French midfielder Tolisso gave his side a late foothold in the game as he reacted first to head home past Onana.
And it appeared to give the Ligue 1 side fresh impetus heading into the final 20 minutes of the match. It wasn't long before they were level as United failed to clear the ball and Tagliafico thundered home a dramatic equaliser.
Tolisso dismissedWith the momentum now firmly with Lyon, they were bizarrely reduced to ten men. After picking up a booking earlier in the game, the French side's captain Tolisso was dismissed.
He appeared to have a tangle of legs with Yoro as he attempted to run free down the right. And the referee did not hesitate as he brandished the yellow card. Tolisso, Lyon boss Paulo Fonseca and his players were all left baffled at the decision and in their defence, it was very harsh indeed.
In typical fashion, Lyon looked to be on their way to sealing a spot in the last four as Rayan Cherki thundered a brilliant effort home to stun the home side. The Frenchman danced forwards during the closing stages of the first-half of extra-time and scored with style.
Lyon then had a golden chance to seemingly secure victory as Malick Fofana was taken down by in extra-time. Lacazette was the man to step up and scored confidently to all-but put Lyon through despite Fernandes' late spot kick of his own - or so they thought.
United's comeback floors French sideFor a club with the long history of Man United, they have had there fair share of unbelievable comebacks. But not many will top this one.
If Fernandes' penalty gave Old Trafford fleeting hope, Kobbie Mainoo's composed strike gave it new life. And Maguire's late header then sent the stadium into absolute pandemonium.
There's no getting away from it, United's season has been absolutely rotten but if Amorim's side go all the way to win the competition and seal a spot, then this night will be looked back on with not only affection but sheer love.
