During the 2024-25 tour of Australia, Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the sole Indian bowler to secure a victory for his team, leading to a remarkable win in Perth. He also took on the role of stand-in captain for the Sydney Test when Rohit Sharma opted out. Unfortunately, Bumrah was unable to finish that match due to a stress reaction in his back, which sidelined him for nearly five months.
Despite showcasing his leadership abilities, the management of the Indian cricket team remains cautious. Elevating him to a permanent Test captaincy would require him to participate in every match, posing a risk given his injury history. The team is careful not to jeopardize his effectiveness as a bowler by adding captaincy responsibilities.
Management's Perspective on Bumrah's Role
Agarkar emphasized, "He is more valuable to us as a player. We want him to stay fit. Leading a team of 15-16 players adds extra pressure, which can be draining. We prefer him to focus on his bowling rather than take on additional burdens. He understands this, and we've discussed it with him. He knows his physical condition and prioritizes being fit for bowling."
Furthermore, medical experts have reportedly informed the selectors that Bumrah may not be in optimal condition to participate in all five Tests of the upcoming series against England. Given his physical workload and previous back issues, the selectors have decided against assigning him the full-time captaincy in the longest format.
