The last remaining vessel boat of the Global Sumud Flotilla , Marinette, was intercepted by the Israeli navy on Friday
The flotilla said that all 42 of its boats, carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza and volunteers, had been “illegally intercepted," reports AFP.
The last boat was intercepted at 10:29 am (0729 GMT) local time, approximately 42.5 nautical miles from Gaza ," the flotilla said on Telegram, adding that Israeli naval forces had "illegally intercepted all 42 of our vessels each carrying humanitarian aid, volunteers, and the determination to break Israel's illegal siege on Gaza."
The flotilla started its journey last month from Barcelona with more than 40 vessels and around 500 activists, including prominent figures such as Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, Nelson Mandela’s grandson Mandla Mandela, Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, and European parliament member Rima Hassan. Israeli forces detained dozens of activists aboard most vessels. Activists streamed their journey online, voicing solidarity with Palestinians and chanting “Free Palestine!” while facing naval warnings and water cannons.
The Israeli navy had contacted the flotilla earlier on Wednesday, warning that they were approaching an “active combat zone” and urging them to change course, the Israeli foreign ministry said. The ministry also reiterated its offer to transfer the humanitarian aid to Gaza through alternative channels
Israel's interception of the pro-Palestinian aid flotilla prompted global criticism and condemnation, triggering mass demonstrations, retaliation, and threats of large-scale strikes in Italy, Greece, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Tunisia, and other countries. Pro- Palestinian demonstrators showed support and stood in solidarity with the Gaza chanting slogans and demanding end of blockade.
The foreign ministry of Israel confirmed all detainees were safe and would be deported back to Europe. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the Israeli navy, stating, “I commend the soldiers and commanders who carried out their mission on Yom Kippur in the most professional and efficient manner. Their action prevented dozens of vessels from entering the war zone and repelled a campaign of delegitimisation against Israel.”
