Investigators in Utah have recovered the rifle used to kill conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, the FBI confirmed Thursday. Robert Bohls, the FBI’s special agent in charge, said the weapon is a high-powered bolt-action rifle. “We have recovered what we believe is the weapon that was used in yesterday’s shooting. It is a high-powered bolt-action rifle,” Bohls told a media briefing.
Suspect images obtained
Authorities have also obtained images of the suspect but have not released them publicly. Bohls said, “We have images of the suspect. We’re doing everything we can to find him, and we’re not sure how far he has gone yet, but we will, we will do our best.”
Profile of the shooter
Police said the suspected shooter “appears to be of college age” and was able to blend in with the student population, which initially complicated identification efforts. The Utah Department of Public Safety emphasized that the individual remains at large.
Investigation ongoing
Beau Mason, commissioner of the Utah Department of Public Safety, said officials are using video footage and advanced technology to identify the suspect. “We are working through some technologies and some ways to identify this individual,” Mason said. “We are confident in our abilities right now.”
Impact and reaction
The killing of Kirk, 30, founder of Turning Point USA and a prominent right-wing youth leader, sent shockwaves through Washington and the conservative movement. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance released statements paying tribute to Kirk, highlighting his role as a friend, ally, and key figure in youth-focused political campaigns.
Public alert
Authorities have urged students, residents, and the wider community to remain vigilant. They encouraged anyone with information about the suspect or the incident to come forward, stressing that the investigation is ongoing.
