Charlie Kirk killing: 'High-powered' rifle recovered, FBI says killer 'appears to be of college age'

Investigators in Utah have recovered the rifle used to kill conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, the FBI confirmed Thursday. Robert Bohls, the FBI’s special agent in charge, said the weapon is a high-powered bolt-action rifle. “We have recovered what we believe is the weapon that was used in yesterday’s shooting. It is a high-powered bolt-action rifle,” Bohls told a media briefing.

Suspect images obtained
Authorities have also obtained images of the suspect but have not released them publicly. Bohls said, “We have images of the suspect. We’re doing everything we can to find him, and we’re not sure how far he has gone yet, but we will, we will do our best.”

Police said the suspected shooter “appears to be of college age” and was able to blend in with the student population, which initially complicated identification efforts. The Utah Department of Public Safety emphasized that the individual remains at large.

Beau Mason, commissioner of the Utah Department of Public Safety, said officials are using video footage and advanced technology to identify the suspect. “We are working through some technologies and some ways to identify this individual,” Mason said. “We are confident in our abilities right now.”
