NEW DELHI: The border security force (BSF) has recovered gold worth over Rs 55 lakh and Bangladeshi currency valued at around Rs 14.45 lakh in separate operations conducted along the South Bengal border over the past three days, the paramilitary force said in a statement on Tuesday, reported PTI.
According to the BSF, jawans from the Mahakhola border outpost (BOP) in Nadia district spotted a person moving suspiciously towards a plantation area on November 3. When they tried to intercept him, the individual fled, leaving behind a bag.
Upon searching the bag, BSF personnel found 20 lakh Bangladeshi Taka, estimated to be worth Rs 14,45,638 in Indian currency, the statement said.
In another operation carried out on November 1, BSF personnel posted at the Boyraghat BOP in Murshidabad district apprehended a smuggler who was attempting to move gold illegally across the border from Bangladesh. During a search, two gold biscuits and two small gold pieces, collectively worth Rs 55,35,480, were recovered, the BSF said.
The smuggler, along with the seized gold and his motorcycle, was handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal action.
The BSF said both incidents underline the ongoing efforts to curb smuggling and illegal cross-border trade activities along the India–Bangladesh frontier in South Bengal.
