A British holidaymaker has taken the sunbed-towel wars into her own hands after she spotted fellow guests ignoring the 9am rule. Samantha Cooper, a mother from Manchester, has turned on the other hotel visitors after she spotted them sneaking down to claim sunbeds at 1.30am. While on a two-week family holiday to Cyprus, Ms Cooper became increasingly frustrated with the morning sunbed scramble.
Despite the hotel's strict rule of not allowing guests to put towels down before 9am, the Manchester mum said it was still a struggle to find a spot. To battle against the morning rush, the 40-year-old began taking matters into her own hands. Ms Cooper was on her balcony at 1.30am when she spotted other guests sneaking down to claim sunbeds by placing their towels down.
The mother then waited until the rule-breakers left and went down the pool and removed the towels from the sunbeds.
Ellie Ikin, Ms Cooper's 25-year-old daughter, said they "deserved it" as "every morning was a struggle".
She told Manchester Evening News: "The hotel said they had rules of no one putting towels down until 9am, but no one listened.
"My mum noticed they were putting towels down at 1.30am from her balcony."
She added: "We were annoyed because the people who were doing it didn't sit around the pool until later in the afternoon. They were never down there until at least 3pm."
Ms Ikin said she was "happy" her mum pulled the towels off, allowing others to have "a chance to get a bed" in the morning.
Despite Ms Cooper's best efforts, the nighttime sunbed hoggers were not deterred. The following morning, they were spotted doing the exact same thing.
"It's selfish. I completely understand the need of getting a bed early, but 1.30am putting towels out when you have no intention of being there in the morning is ridiculous," Ms Ikin added.
