Emmerdale icon living in caravan before tragic death as final will exposed

One Emmerdale icon who left the soap in 2010 died living in a caravan in Southport, Lancashire, Express.co.uk can exclusively confirm. The final figure of his will has now been exposed after nearly 400 episodes of starring in the ITV soap from 1998.

Andy Devine - real name Peter Devine - played patriarch Shadrach Dingle for more than a decade in the soap, as well as enjoying stints on Coronation Street as Jason Ross, Queer as Folk as Bernard Thomas and Merseybeat as Bobby Miller. His final acting role came in 2011, when he starred as Dennis Dowling in an episode of BBC soap Doctors.

Afterwards, Andy retired from acting and settled down at Ocean Road Riverside Caravan Park in Southport until his death in 2022. He didn't leave an official will, but the total sum of the estate he left totalled £103,776 gross and a net value of £98,907, according to a letter of administration obtained from probate records from 2024.

The 79-year-old was found to have died from hospital-acquired pneumonia after suffering a fall, and had been left lying on the floor for an hour as he was "unable to get up until his carers arrived".

Sefton Senior Coroner Julie Goulding said at the inquest: "Peter had a significant number of serious underlying clinical co-morbidities and, not withstanding all appropriate care and treatment, [his] condition deteriorated culminating in his death."

His death was ruled "accidental", and tributes poured in from his co-stars at the time.

Emmerdale star Liam O'Brien said he was "heartbroken to hear of the passing of an old friend," adding that he was "even sadder that he passed in January and I never knew."

Coronation Street star Daniel Jillings also paid tribute to his "first drama teacher" who was a "character both on and off screen".
