More tragic details of Hollywood icon Diane Keaton's death have been confirmed after the 79-year-old actress died on October 11 - leaving her legions of fans devastated. Diane's cause of death was given as primary bacterial pneumonia, with the Daily Mail claiming her death certificate showed she battled the infection for days before succumbing to it.
There were no other significant contributions to the death, and Diane was cremated on October 14. Symptoms of pneumonia can include coughing, fever, chest pain and difficulty breathing, and the lung infection is caused by bacteria that can develop either on its own or after a viral infection.
Her family issued a statement on Wednesday (October 15) which confirmed: "The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11.
"She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her."
Her health reportedly "declined very suddenly" in the last few months of Diane's life, during which she was "surrounded only by her closest family" - with "Even her longtime friends not fully aware of what was happening".
Her friend, songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, said: "I saw her two or three weeks ago and she was very thin. She had lost so much weight." She added to People: "She had to go to Palm Springs because her house has been damaged inside [by LA wildfires] and they had to clean everything.

"She was down there for a while, and when she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she'd lost."
It comes after the tragic 911 call to emergency services saw the Los Angeles Fire Department respond to a "person down" at around 8am on the 11th.
She was rushed to hospital via ambulance but was later pronounced dead.
