Jamie Gittens has reportedly made a decision on whether to ditch transfer talks with Chelsea in favour of a move to Bayern Munich. And the Borussia Dortmund winger is 'fully committed' to signing a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the two clubs ramping up negotiations during the Club World Cup.
Chelsea and BVB held extensive talks during the first phase of the summer window but failed to reach an agreement in time for the tournament. With senior figures from both clubs in the USA, discussions have continued, and the Londoners are now close to making a breakthrough.
Their pursuit of Gittens looked to be under threat when it emerged that Bayern were posturing to hijack the deal. But according to The Athletic, the Bundesliga giants' interest has not swayed Gittens away from the Premier League, and he still favours a move to the Blues.
There is believed to be optimism that a full club-to-club agreement can be reached 'imminently'. Gittens has already given the green light on a long-term deal which would make him the latest in a long line of talented youngsters to join up with Enzo Maresca's squad.
The Chelsea boss needs at least one new face on the left flank after Mykhaylo Mudryk was charged by the FA over an anti-doping violation and Jadon Sancho was sent back to Manchester United following an underwhelming loan spell.
Gittens scored eight goals and laid on three assists in the Bundesliga last season, as well as netting four more times in the Champions League. The 20-year-old has not started either of Dortmund's Club World Cup games, stirring speculation that they may be keeping him safe from the kind of injury that could scupper his move away.
Having spent time in the youth systems of Chelsea, Reading and Manchester City, Gittens moved to Dortmund in 2020 to begin his career abroad. The England U21 international has been rewarded with bags of senior experience, racking up over a century of games for the Dortmund first team.
Chelsea offered £42m for Gittens earlier in the summer window but saw the bid knocked back. It is understood that an agreement could be reached if Maresca's side get close to Dortmund's £55m valuation.
Liam Delap is the only senior signing brought to Stamford Bridge so far this summer, with the striker joined by a number of pre-agreed arrivals such as Estevao, Dario Essugo and Kendry Paez.
