Bruno Guimaraes has revealed details of a terrifying plane journey that saw his flight forced to turn around due to a shattered window, but confessed he slept through the entire ordeal. The Newcastle star and his club team-mate Joelinton were travelling ahead of international duty when the Brazilian pair witnessed their flight from Amsterdam to South Korea forced to return due to a serious mechanical failure.
It formed part of a gruelling 12,000-mile journey that ultimately saw them board separate aircraft to Seoul. Guimaraes assisted Brazil in thrashing South Korea before they were shocked by Japan and admits he remained completely oblivious to the emergency reversal because he was fast asleep - until it was all clarified to him afterwards.
He revealed: "Two windows broke in the middle of the flight. We were in the middle of the air and could not stop, so we had to fly back. So we lost a few hours to it. Amsterdam to Amsterdam... I've never seen this before.
"I was sleeping. I just woke up and said, 'Two hours to come back to Amsterdam?' I didn't understand anything. But after they explained to me that it was moving a lot during the flight. I was not scared. After, when I knew, I was a little bit. But during the flight, I was okay."
Guimaraes was present to net Newcastle's dramatic last-gasp winner on Saturday as they defeated Fulham at St James' Park.
The midfielder had squandered a golden chance in the second half, directing his header over the bar from close range, before he was perfectly positioned to slot home in the dying moments.
Now, the focus shifts towards defending their Carabao Cup title. Eddie Howe's squad will host Tottenham in the north east this week, with their Brazilian midfielder expressing the team's determination.
He stated: "It means a lot. We want to keep making history. We went 70 years without a win, but we can make it two in two. It's a big possibility, a big opportunity, so we don't want to miss it. It's going to be a big game for us and we hope we're gonna be ready for taking advantage in the game.
"It's a big moment, and even more because we won last season. We want to do it again, keep making history, against a great and very focused team."
Guimaraes made history as the first Newcastle captain to lift a trophy in 70 years when he held up the trophy at Wembley following their victory over Liverpool.
