Virgil van Dijk claims he hasn’t spoken to Trent Alexander-Arnold about his contract situation because it wouldn’t be fair. The captain penned a new two-year deal last week following on from committing his future to the club.
, 26, still looks set to join this summer unless there is a huge U-turn on his decision with no deal agreed with Liverpool ahead of his contract running out in June. The Reds right-back was tight-lipped about his future in an interview with following to put his side one win away from their second top-flight title since 1990.
Alexander-Arnold was back from injury and playing for the first time since reports emerged that he could be heading to Real this summer. But Van Dijk insists he’s not questioning Alexander-Arnold about his future.
He said: "I think he was under a lot of pressure already so there’s no point for me to put him on the spot. The full focus was for him to get back to full fitness, be important for the remaining games of the season. And he showed today that he was so now it's on to the next.
“Whatever may happen in the future for him, that's something that he has to resolve with himself and the family. But he's a Liverpool player at this point and he's important for our team. He has been important throughout the whole season and today again he came back from the injury, a long one, and that's what I'm happy about.

“He's back in and amongst us, he's important today and we have still five more games after this so hopefully he can be important for the rest of the games. And since I've joined the club, he has been a fantastic, fantastic player and there's a lot of good things that he will always be remembered for if he decides to leave. But listen, at this point we don't know as a group what's going to happen.”
Alexander-Arnold celebrated wildly when he scored as he whipped off his shirt and slid on his knees in front of the away fans who had been singing for the “Scouser in our team” from the moment he came on. At the end of the game, Van Dijk pushed the right-back towards the supporters to take more acclaim for his match-winning heroics.
The Dutchman added: “I think we forget that we are dealing with a human being. Sometimes he goes through so many moments in the last couple of months and everyone will have an opinion on the way he’s obviously been. But for us as players, we want to win games and he's been important throughout the whole season.
“He's been important for all those years that we have been together and there's still games to go and then we to need to have the best Trent Alexander-Arnold and what I said, what happen in the future, what happen that's life and football and we'll see.”
