Ruben Amorim makes alarming admission after 'shambolic' Man Utd outplayed by Brentford

Send Push

Ruben Amorim admitted he was left "hurt" after Manchester United suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat at Brentford to pile the pressure on him.

United found themselves 2-0 down after 20 minutes, but were given hope when £74million summer signing Benjamin Sesko pulled one back with his first goal for the club.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes missed the chance to make it 2-2 as his penalty was saved, with Brentford substitute Mathias Jensen scoring a third for the hosts to cap a miserable day for United.

Amorim has managed just 34 points from 33 games and has failed to win back-to-back Premier League fixtures since taking over at United almost a year ago. United have seven points from a possible 18 this season and, having failed to qualify for Europe last season, have already exited the EFL Cup to League Two Grimsby.

Defeat at Brentford was United's third in the league this season after losses against Arsenal and Manchester City, with Amorim acknowledging his side's continued failings. "It's always the same to lose at this club, it hurts a lot," said Amorim. "We need to think about the next one."

"Of course we want to win. We didn't control the game. We played the game of Brentford. First balls, second balls, set-pieces. All the crucial moments were against us. It's tough to lose again but we need to think about the next one.

"The first goal was a long ball. We worked on that in the week, and on set pieces. We knew the long balls were coming and one touch they had the opportunity. We need to do better.

"We didn't play our game. We only had control for some moments. But it was more or less all the same. We need to play our games, not the opponents', but they were stronger on that."

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards slammed United. "Shambolic. The system is hampering them. They're not sure where they're meant to be," he said on Match of the Day. "In terms of the goals, there were individual errors. Maguire was trying to play offside for the first one - there's no point gambling there.

"For the second, (Matthijs) de Ligt doesn't know where's he's going and Maguire isn't sure where to position himself. It's 100 per cent confusion caused by playing that system. It doesn't suit the players."
