Lucknow: With a surge in JN.1 subvariant COVID-19 cases in Southeast Asia, Uttar Pradesh has moved to preemptively assess its preparedness. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath chaired a high-level meeting this week to review health infrastructure across the state, despite no formal advisory yet issued by the central government.
Hospitals and medical colleges have been placed on alert mode. Special attention is being given to critical care units, including the 10-bed ICUs that were set up during previous pandemic waves. These facilities are now undergoing functionality tests to ensure rapid deployment if required.
The Chief Minister emphasized the need for uninterrupted operation of oxygen generation plants and ventilators in district hospitals. Health workers, who played a central role during earlier outbreaks, will undergo refresher training to reinforce readiness protocols. Officials claim that past investments in health infrastructure have left the state better positioned to manage any resurgence.
Still, the 2021 second wave, marked by oxygen shortages and overwhelmed hospitals, remains a stark memory. The CM’s directive to reassess readiness may be seen as both a precaution and an acknowledgment of those earlier shortcomings.
Simultaneously, departments of health, medical education, and local administration have been instructed to coordinate efforts for early management of seasonal illnesses like dengue and malaria—diseases that often strain medical systems during the monsoon months.
The review meeting confirmed UP's 178,000 oxygen-supported beds and 56,000 ventilators remain operational. The CM stressed avoiding panic while ensuring systematic preparedness, noting the state's health system is "fully vigilant and capable" to handle emerging challenges.
