Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Monday issued summons to 10 Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, including several Members of Parliament, in connection with a protest held outside the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters on April 8, 2024.
Those summoned include prominent TMC MPs Derek O'Brien, Mohd. Nadimul Haque, Dola Sen, and Saket Gokhle, along with party leaders Sagarika Ghosh, Vivek Gupta, Arpita Ghosh, Dr. Santanu Sen, Abir Ranjan Bishwas, and Sudip Raha.
The case is now scheduled for hearing on April 30, 2025, when all the summoned individuals are expected to appear before the court.
The summons were issued after the court took cognizance of a charge sheet and complaint filed by the Delhi Police regarding the demonstration.
What was TMC's ECI protest?
The protest, which led to the detention of TMC leaders by Delhi Police, was organised to demand the removal of the chiefs of four central investigative and enforcement agencies — the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), National Investigation Agency (NIA), and the Income Tax Department.
The TMC accused the agencies of functioning under political pressure from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), especially in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Earlier on the day of the protest, a 10-member TMC delegation had met the full bench of the Election Commission to press for their demands.
Following the meeting, the leaders launched a 24-hour dharna outside the EC office. The delegation included MPs Derek O'Brien, Mohammed Nadimul Haque, Dola Sen, Saket Gokhale, Sagarika Ghose, MLA Vivek Gupta, former MPs Arpita Ghosh, Dr. Santanu Sen, Abir Ranjan Biswas, and Sudip Raha, vice president of the party's student wing in West Bengal.
As the protest continued, Delhi Police detained the leaders and forcefully cleared the demonstration site. While the leaders were released later that night, they continued their protest at the Mandir Marg police station the following morning.
