US President Donald Trump said his administration is working on a proposal to allow certain undocumented workers in the farming and hospitality sectors to continue working through a “temporary pass.”
The proposal, still under development, would apply to undocumented immigrants who have worked for many years on farms or in hotels. Trump’s remarks came during a Fox News interview on Sunday, where he acknowledged the challenges of strict immigration enforcement in labour-dependent industries.
“What I do have, I cherish our farmers. And when we go into a farm and we take away people that have been working there for 15 and 20 years, who were good, who possibly came in incorrectly… we’re going to do something for farmers where we can let the farmer sort of be in charge,” Trump said.
He added, “When you go into a farm and you set somebody working with them for nine years doing this kind of work, which is hard work to do and a lot of people aren’t going to do it, and you end up destroying a farmer because you took all the people away — it’s a problem.”
Trump clarified that the idea is to allow a pathway where such workers pay taxes and can be retained under employer oversight. “We’re working on it right now. We’re going to work it so that, some kind of a temporary pass, where people pay taxes, where the farmer can have a little control,” he said.
He also said the policy would extend to the hospitality industry. “I’m the strongest immigration guy that there’s ever been, but I’m also the strongest farmer guy that there’s ever been, and that includes also hotels and… places where people work, a certain group of people work.”
Trump had earlier posted on Truth Social on June 12 that farmers and hotel owners were concerned about losing long-time workers due to immigration enforcement. He wrote, “We must protect our Farmers,” and added, “changes are coming.”
