The government has started the process of strictly returning ration cards from ineligible families. Now recovery will be made from those who took advantage of cheap grains in a fraudulent manner.
The government provides grains at cheap rates to crores of people living below the poverty line in India. For this, ration cards are issued to poor families under the National Food Security Act, but the reality is that a large number of people are also taking advantage of this scheme who do not fall in the category of eligibility. These include many such families whose annual income is in lakhs. Still they are taking advantage of cheap and free ration. Now the government has started tightening the noose on such fake beneficiaries.
Strict stand of the government
It has been made clear by the Food and Supply Department that recovery will now be made from those who are using ration cards despite being ineligible. The government has launched a Give Up campaign and appealed to the people that the families who do not fulfill the eligibility criteria should voluntarily surrender their ration cards. After the stipulated time limit, those whose cards are found to be fake will be charged a heavy penalty.
How will the recovery be done
The administration has clarified that the families found ineligible will be charged the price of the kilos of ration they have taken so far. For example, if a family has lifted 100 kilos of wheat, rice or sugar, then its recovery will be done at the rate of Rs 27 per kilo. That is, the amount of benefit taken will have to be returned to the government. Along with this, there is also a provision for heavy fine and legal action.
Who is not eligible
The government has fixed different eligibility for availing the ration for urban and rural areas.
Urban areas - Families whose annual income is more than one lakh rupees. Those who have a concrete house, four-wheeler, a fridge or a big generator will not be considered eligible for this.
Rural areas- Those who have more than 5 acres of cultivable land, vehicles like tractor or harvester or the annual income of the family is more than 2 lakhs, they also cannot take advantage of the scheme.
Government warning
If ineligible people do not surrender their ration card on time, not only will they be charged, but their card will be canceled and a fine will also be imposed. In serious cases, there can be a jail sentence.
Appeal to the people
The intention of the government is clear that the benefits of the scheme should reach only those who need it. In such a situation, families whose financial condition is strong and who do not fulfill the eligibility criteria should surrender the ration card themselves. Otherwise, they may have to face heavy recovery and legal action later.
