The long-running speculation has now come to an end. Google has finally confirmed that it is working on turning ChromeOS and Android into a unified platform. This was revealed by Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google, during a conversation with TechRadar. This is the first time a senior Google official has officially confirmed this plan.
When Samat was asked why he was paying so much attention to the reporter's use of Apple devices such as MacBook Pro, iPhone and Apple Watch, he replied, "I asked because we are combining ChromeOS and Android to create a single platform and I want to know how people are using their laptops nowadays and what they are doing."
Long-running speculation confirmed
Since the end of the year 2024, there were reports that Google was working towards integrating both its operating systems, but till now, there was no official confirmation. Now it is clear from Samat's statement that this process has started.
Purpose: Better device integration and user experience
Google has not yet shared the timeline or full details of the project, but Samat's statement indicates that the company aims to create a platform that can provide a more seamless and connected experience between laptops, tablets, and smartphones. This can also strengthen Android's influence on various device form factors.
Preparations already underway
Google had already taken steps in this direction as early as 2024. At that time, some key parts of the Android kernel were added to ChromeOS. The company said that this would lead to faster adoption of AI features on various devices. Now with this confirmation, this effort seems to be taking a new form.
Pixel laptops and Android 16 will have big changes.
A recent leak indicated that Google is working on a Pixel-branded laptop codenamed "Snowy", which could be the first example of this new software. Apart from this, the Android 16 update will also include features that provide a desktop-like experience such as multi-window multitasking and desktop mode on external displays. These features will also be included in tablets to make them an alternative to laptops.
